A lot of people have been asking me lately to explain a certain phrase I use to express sincere shock in other people’s idiocy. In day to day life, in replace of “no shit” I often reply “big red truck.” It comes from a joke I heard in high school once.

A blonde woman calls 911. In a panic she tells the dispatcher that her house is on fire and that she needs the fire department there immediately. The dispatcher tells her, just calm down Mame and tell us how to get there. The blonde lady replies “DUH, THE BIG RED TRUCK”

In the joke, the blonde believes she must explain something very simple that everyone should have known. I adopted her punchline for times when I am shocked that other folks didn’t quite catch on as quickly as common sense says they should have.
