As of tonight, Michael Phelps has won his fifth gold medal in the Beijing Olympic Games, which brings his lifetime medal count to 11.

Phelps broke the old record of the number of gold medals any athlete has ever won. The previous record was nine, held by Mark Spitz, Carl Lewis, Paavo Nurmi and Larysa Latynina. Phelps has also broken five world records at the 2008 Olympic games, including the 800m relay team where he shattered the old record by more than 4 seconds.

The U.S team finished the relay event in 6:58.56, after Phelps finished his part of the relay at 1:43.41. Team USA is the first team to finish this event in under 7 minutes, breaking their own record of 7:03.24 from last year’s World Champions events.

Phelps is widely recognized as the best swimmer history has seen and plans to continue competing at least through the 2012 London games.

Best luck in your final three races, Mr. Phelps. Congratulations, Team USA.
