It is getting to the point that I can’t even watch the news anymore. It seems everytime I turn on the TV, the Fed is bailing out, or taking over, another giant in the financial rink. First, they take over Freddie and Fannie via conservatorship, then they coerce BofA to buy out Merrill, now they are bailing out AIG and in return receive a 79% stake in the company.
We can’t afford to shell out all of this money to companies who should have known better. The banks were handing out loans to anyone without regard to whether or not they actually should have had a loan, and then these guys were buying up those loans knowing they were junk! Didn’t anyone stop and say “hey…wait a minute! This may go bad!?”
I say, if the company goes under due to their own stupidity: tough cookies. Yes, it would damage the economy, and yes people would lose jobs. And that would make things worse, but the government should not be controlling the market. Hell, they aren’t even doing a good job of that!
I hope the next President can handle this.
