On October 14, 2008, a grand jury returned and indictment against Casey Anthony, mother of missing toddler, Caylee Anthony, for the charges of capital murder, child abuse and neglect along with five lesser charges.
Shortly before the announcement, her lawyer continued to maintain her innocence, stating, “She has been living a nightmare,” the attorney added. “She has a missing child. She’s also a child.”
Among the list of witnesses paraded before the grand jury was Casey’s own father, George Anthony. He seemed grieved by his own testimony stating it was the “hardest thing he ever had to do.”
After leaving the courthouse, Casey Anthony was followed by undercover police as she drove her mother’s SUV. After changing cars on a highway underpass, police pulled her over and arrested her. For a full recap of the events leading up to her arrest see this timeline, courtesy of Investigation Discovery.
Throughout the investigation into the disappearance, and suspected murder, of little Caylee Anthony, her mother has been unhelpful at best and downright a hinderance. She has lied to police, her family and friends repeatedly about everything from when she last saw Caylee (31 days before she was reported missing) to where she worked (she claimed to still be employed by Universal Studios although she had not worked there in several years). She also claimed to have left Caylee with a woman no one has ever met, and whom she cannot give a correct address for (despite the fact that she supposedly dropped her off at an address that has been vacant for over six months now).
The facts are shady and we will probably never know the truth. But, if Casey is not guilty, she sure is acting like she is. If she is guilty, I can only hope she will do the right thing and direct police to where she left little Caylee so that she can have a proper buriel and we can put Casey to death knowing that the only question that will be left, and always unanswered is: why?
