The year will officially come to an end quite shortly now and it is only fitting that we look back on this year and review what happened, how, and why. Let’s be honest, this year was full of ups and even more downs. So, without further adieu, here is 2009 in Review:
Deaths:
In 2009, we lost a lot of folks. The lacking of life include Farrah Fawcett, the King of Pop, Patrick Swayze, Natasha Richardson, Jett Travolta, Billy Mays, David Carradine, Steve McNair, Jade Goody and my personal favorite: the Lion of the Senate, Ted Kennedy.
New Celebrity:
We also gained many new faces in the public life including: The Gosselins (who were arguably famous prior to 2009 but really hit the big time when their cute family of 9,000 blew up after mommy and daddy decided to break up), Erin Andrews, Susan Boyle, Octomom, Carrie Prejean, Mark Sanford (still hiking that trail?), Bo, Falcon Heene, Sean Goldman, and Sully.
Health and Science:
What a year for science nerds. We have had the swine flu (which turned out to be much less scary than we thought), a solar eclipse, the perseids, the Conficker worm (again, less scary than thought), some more space exploration, some shitty weather, lifted restrictions on stem cell research (yay!), Air France Flight 448 disappeared in the Bermuda triangle, and it is still getting warmer (or so I hear…).
Politics:
Well, this was an exciting year for politics. We got rid of Bush (about damn time, too) and we gained Barack Obama. His inauguration was the single largest inauguration in history. 1.8 million gathered in down right cold ass temps to watch him screw up his oath. Of course that wasn’t the only Obama contraversy. They also included: the birthers, his (somewhat) failed stimulus plan, the (long) health care reform debate and the (idiotic) death panel debate it stirred, his falling approval ratings, and the lengths at which his opposition will go to make themselves look like racist idiots.
Successes in Marketing:
Some companies did succeed (I said some, not many) this year. The few include: Facebook with over 300million “friends” and a value of around $10 billion, twitter who just wont die, Hulu who just wont quit, bing that I refuse to use, the iPhone 3GS, Dollar Stores because we are all poor, and the Droid (which I adore).
The Economy:
It sucked. It really fucking sucked.
Events that cannot be categorized:
Sully! That pilot that landed the plane on the Hudson River and got everyone out safely. Gotta love him.
Tiger Woods. Oh, Tiger. I was behind you at first. I thought to myself: surely these women are lying! But no, it seems not. And, sorry, but I think it is a bit funny.
Phelps. So you smoked some pot. Who the fuck cares? You are still one awesome swimmer.
The Christmas attempted bombing. A tragedy averted, almost. While many lives were saved, one was lost. The life of the bomber was lost a long time ago. I simply cannot imagine what would drive a human to kill his fellow men so viciously. I am only grateful he was too inept to be successful.
Disney’s first animated movie in freaking forever. Oh! And the first African American princess. This is a HUGE step for Disney that is better known for not so subtly being racist.
So, that is 2009. If I missed any major events be sure to let me know all about it down below in the comments. Here is to a (hopefully) better 2010 (that is twenty ten not two thousand and ten, fyi)! Happy New Year!

Obama's not-so-deserved "Nobel peace prize"

How did I forget that!? One day he may deserve it. But he didn't deserve it when he was nominated, voted for or awarded. And he doesn't deserve it today.

What shall I do with you, Nate? I may have you write this year's review!
I also forgot the ongoing gay marriage debate and the legalization of gay marriage in several states.

” I simply cannot imagine what would drive a human to kill his fellow men so viciously.”
I call it religion.
No, not your version of religion – but religion was, indeed the motivator.
And 2009?
That’s the year I met you :-)

Mac, no I disagree. I think it is hate that drives people to find excuses to act out. They merely use a distorted view of the faith (because, let me assure you, Islam is peaceful at the core) as an excuse to exercise their hatred.
Maybe that is the same thing. But I think it is an abuse of religion and not religion as intended.

Yes.
I should have said religious fanaticism.
