On the surface, I understand what the Republicans are doing. Or, at least, what they claim they are doing. They claim they are trying to stop us from sliding into a black hole of socialized health care and education (oh the horror! Healthy, educated people!). They claim to be standing by their values and that is why they are attempting to block every single action that is attempted in Congress.
Of course, what they are really doing is attempting to win the midterm elections. They believe that if they can block all of the Democrat’s bills, they will be able to say “look! Democrats have done nothing while everything just gets worse!” And, some folks will buy into it. But, and for this I am grateful, more and more people are starting to recognize that the Republicans are actually doing us grave harm in their action of inaction.
See, but keeping us at a stalemate and acting so devisively, the Republicans are pushing us further back as the rest of the world keeps moving forward. Need an example of what will happen if this goes on unchecked? Look at Russia pre 1990s. Look to China pre 2000. Look to modern Cuba. North Korea. Venezuela. It is not their dictatorship that we should fear – our Constitution is strong enough to withstand that. It is their position in the world, their lack of advancement in many fields, their closed down, iron curtain ways.
That is the real danger of the politics of no.

I especially like it when you talk politics.
Government was supposed to be a little slow. But, not stalemated. We are falling behind in important areas. The public has to stay involved and keep close watch on the government– not so much the government keeping close watch on us. Too many people have got it backwards.

I like slow government. I think major issues should be debated, bills should be fully read and understood. Language should be clear and the public should be educated before anything occurs.
What I don’t like is why everything is getting shot down. They are being petty children. Congressmen (on both sides) have forgotten just what it is their job entails. It is not about winning the next election or saving political face. It is about doing what is best for America and serving the American people – doing our will. Don’t worry about the 2010 election. If you do a good job, we will keep you there. But pretending to do a good job while really just holding us all back and treating us like imbeciles that cannot possibly understand the intricacies of a bill is a quick way to get your ass booted out.

You can’t get anything done when [almost] everyone and everything is out for itself.

Maybe we need term re-election limits on all offices– like we have for the office of president. Hmmm . . . I wonder if that bill would ever get passed.
Incidentally, I don’t see a way to get comment notifications from your posts. Am I overlooking the link somewhere?

Term limits have been proposed many times and each time it was either shot down in a landslide or it never even made it to vote. It is disgusting, really. But until it becomes a priority for the people it will never be a priority for the politicians. I, personally, think we need term limits on all offices – including the Supreme Court. No political position should be a career.
Notification link? Hmmmm…nope don’t think there is one. Let me work on that! Thanks, uruk.
