In a plan that shows just how little we value education in this country, Utah is considering an option to save money that would include cutting grade 12 – completely. Because that is an amazing idea in a country that already has a staggering number of undereducated students and a woeful standing in the academic world. We have millions of illiterates, and a huge portion of high school graduates don’t even have a basic grasp on literature, history, mathematics, and science. So, why not just reduce what they know a little further!
Already, students are unprepared for college. Cutting back their education further is only going to harm them further. I cannot begin to explain the damage this could do. I have people in my classes that cannot string together basic sentences. People that do not know what country Colombus sailed for (it was NOT America, folks!). People that cannot name even half of the Presidents in the last century!
Why not cut back on wasteful spending, Utah? Why not raise taxes? Sell some land. Cut back sports programs. Reduce civil servants’ pay. Eliminate tax breaks. Stop funding the Mormon Church. Stop spending millions in tax dollars on welfare benefits to radical fundamentalists that live in illegal polygamist marriages.
Why the fuck is education even an option to be cut? That is what is wrong with this country. Fucking stupid Republicans.

Remind me not to send any kids I know to Utah for school.
Is this serious? Heck, why not cut High School altogether? They should know their guzintas by sixth grade anyway, right?
Let the little shits get a job and support themselves. Dang right, I was working four full-time jobs by 12 years old!

I was thinking about this.
My Dad (and my step-dad too) Finished no more than the eighth grade. Maybe Mom likes ‘em that way ;-)
With my dad, it was a time/cultire thing. He quit school and joined the Army at 14. WWII was in full swing, and he thought that was what was expected of men to do. His age was discovered during his training and he was sent home.
But, my father had a love of the written word. He was one of the most well read men I have ever known. So, I consider him self educated beyond his formal school years.
And, both men came from an era when one could still earn a decent living without an expansive education. That just isn’t true today.

That is right that it is not true today, Mac. Without at least a minimum of a high school education there is not hope for success for today’s kids. Without a college education, they will barely get by without labor or specialized skills.
